Origin and History

The Smålandsstövare comes from the vicinity of the cities of Jönköping and Huskvarna, from the historical province of Småland in southern Sweden. He had a reputation as a hare and fox hunters. A feature that often occurs is the innate stubby tail, a Geneva Ehler. At the beginning, the short tail occurred in 50% of puppies. With the recognition in 1921 demanded the Svenska Kennelklubben that a normal long tail is desirable, since the mortality of pups is increased if both parents have the facility of bobtail ( Semiletalfaktor ). Nevertheless, the plant is widely used for short tail in the race as before, so that was also born today stummelschwänzige dogs. In evaluating these dogs have no disadvantages over normalschwänzigen.
