Smederevska Palanka

Smederevska Palanka (Serbian Cyrillic - Смедеревска Паланка ) is a town in Serbia in the district Podunavlje. It has about 25,300 inhabitants and is situated at the Jasenica.

History

The name of the city has a checkered history. In 1021 the city was first mentioned in writing. The document is kept in the Monastery of Saint Catherine in Egypt. The name changed over the times of Aspri Eklesija, Bink Palanka, Jeni Palanka, Velika Palanka, on the Ottoman name Hasanpašina Palanka from 1463 up to the present Smederevska Palanka. This Smederevska Palanka is a location with the fortress type Palanke in the former Sanjak of Smederevo.

Economy

In the town are predominantly industrial and agriculture is the main employer. Well known is the wagon construction company Gosa, producing for JŽ and Serbian Railways, including the special train " Plavi voz " of Yugoslav President Tito.
