Smith Island (Japan)

Sumisu Jima (Japanese须 美 寿 岛, also: Sumisu -tō ), in English also known as Iceland Smith or Smith Rock, is a small, uninhabited rocky volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean. It is the third - most southerly island of the Japanese Izu Islands.

Management

As the entire island chain of the Izu Islands belongs Sumisu -jima administratively to the prefecture of Tokyo. They are part of the sub-prefecture Hachijo, which is managed by Hachijo -jima off. However, you belong to, as well as the three Izu Islands Bayonnaise Rocks, Torishima and Sōfugan to no congregation and are thus de facto unincorporated community. They are claimed by the communities Aogashima and Hachijo.

Geography

Sumisu -jima is located about 520 km south of Tokyo and 110 km north of the neighboring island of Torishima. The elongated, almost extending vertically from the ocean rocks has an area of 0.02 km ² and reaches a height of 136 m above sea level.

The island represents the temperature above the sea southern edge of a submarine caldera with a diameter of eight to nine kilometers dar. The last eruption occurred in 1916. Since the 1970s discoloration of water were frequently observed in the vicinity of Sumisu -jima.
