Smithfield is a village in Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. In the census of 2000, there were 867 inhabitants.
During the American Civil War the Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan crossed the villages Moorefield, Harrisville, New Athens, Smithfield, New Alexandria, Wintersville, Two Ridge, Richmond, East Springfield, Bergholz, and Monroeville on his way north, where he defeated had to suffer. This military operation was known as Morgan's Raid.
Demography
At the time of the census of 2000, there were 867 persons Smithfield. The population density was 349 people per square kilometer. There were 405 housing units at an average 163 per square kilometer. The population consisted of 87.0 percent Smithfields White, 9.8 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American and 0.4 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.8 percent from two or more races. 0.2 percent of the population professed to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Residents Smithfields were distributed to 348 households out of which 27.4 percent of children lived in 18 years. 48.9 percent of the married couples living together, 11.5 percent had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5 percent were non-families. 32.1 percent of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 15.6 percent of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size is 2.9 persons.
The population was spread out with 24.1 percent of minors, 6 percent of 18-24 year olds, 26.1 percent of 25-44 year olds, 24 percent of 45-64 year olds and 19.8 per cent at the age of 65 years or more. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.5 males. In the over -18s accounted for 100 women 82.8 males.
