Smithsonian Environmental Research Center

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center ( SERC ) is a 11 km ² large environmental research and educational institution, which is operated by the Smithsonian Institution. It is located in Edgewater, Maryland. The focus of studies of the Center is on the ecosystems of coastal areas, especially the wetlands of the Chesapeake Bay.

Survey

The SERC conducts research in many areas dealing with environmental research of terrestrial ecoregions, the atmosphere and the estuaries. The disciplines are: Botany, Ecology, Environmental Education, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics and Zoology. This center provides the interns, students in postgraduate, doctoral students and doctoral candidates. The SERC receives each year more than 10,000 students, teachers and families as guests.

In addition, it serves as a center of research and education on human impact on the land-sea interactions in coastal areas. The lab focuses on a model of human interaction with the environment. The center receives $ 20000000 of grants, contracts with government agencies, foundations, and industry.

Innovations

The SERC has developed a unique Biotelemetry with which to observe the migratory behavior, habitat and the development of blue crabs. Blue crabs are marine predators and very important for the crab fishermen in North America. It is the patent holder for the Spectral Radiometer, the national standard for monitoring of solar radiation. The Center has also developed a model with which you can test the water quality and discharge of nutrients in their catchment area in river mouths.
