The Smurfit- Stone Container Corporation ( SSCC) is a US-based companies in the packaging industry. It is one of the largest cardboard packaging manufacturer in the world, the market leader in North America (USA and Canada). In addition, Smurfit- Stone is one of the largest recycling companies. The headquarters of the companies listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange company located in Creve Coeur (Missouri ) and Chicago.

History

The company was formed on 18 November 1998 from the merger in 1974 founded, based in St. Louis, Jefferson Smurfit Corporation ( JSC) - a subsidiary of Jefferson Smurfit Group plc Irish - with the Stone Container Corporation founded in 1926, based in Chicago.

In May 2000, in Montreal (Canada) based St. Laurent Paperboard Inc. was acquired in September 2002, the paper mill MeadWestvaco 's Stevenson in Stevenson (Alabama ). In March 2003, Smurfit- Stone acquired by surrendering European production the remaining shares of Smurfit- MBI.

From the merger of Jefferson Smurfit Group and Kappa Packaging the end of 2005 originated, the Smurfit Kappa Group, the largest producer of corrugated board in Europe. The Smurfit Kappa Group is owned by the investment firm Madison Dearborn Partners, Cinven Limited, CVC Capital Partners and members of management.
