Snake farm

Snake farms are farms on which various poisonous snake species are kept to attract snake venom, which is further processed to medicines.

Frequently snake farms have a spectator area, where guests watch the snakes in their terrariums and possibly also able to observe the " milking" of the serpent.

In addition, the extraction of snake venom is essential in order to produce an antidote to that needs to be injected to the victims of a snake bite in time to prevent serious damage to health or death.

Important snake farms:

  • Pasteur Institute (Bangkok ), one of the first snake farms around the world, founded in 1923.
  • Snake Farm at the pharmaceutical company Nordmark Arzneimittel GmbH in Uetersen, largest snake farm in Europe with over 1,500 snakes, particularly pit vipers bred for medical use, not open to visitors.
  • Snake Farm in Schladen, the largest accessible for visitors farm in Europe with approximately 1,000 snakes.
