SNCF Class A1AA1A 68000

The diesel-electric locomotives of the series A1AA1A 68000 were built 1963-1968 for the French state railway SNCF.

There are mainline diesel locomotives for passenger and freight trains with the wheel arrangement (A1A ) ' (A1A ) ', the middle axes of the three-axle bogies are therefore not driven. By changing the springs, either a friction weight are made of 72 or 80 tons, a maximum axle load of the driving axles of 18 or 20 tons.

It is installed a diesel engine with 12 cylinders. This originates from the SACM (type AGO DSHR ) or by Sulzer (type 12LVA 24d). The Sulzer diesel engine has a bore of 230 mm and a stroke of 220 mm.

The machines were ordered on June 7, 1961. The first locomotive was on 13 December 1963 at the Depot Chalindrey be passed and was used from 1964 in regular operation.

In recent years, the machines were used only for freight; up to 68081 are now all retired.
