SNNS

Stuttgart Neural Network Simulator (abbreviation: SNNS ) is a software package for artificial neural networks that was first developed at the University of Stuttgart and is maintained at the time (2009) at the University of Tübingen. The project was in 1991 awarded the German university award for teaching software in computer science.

Construction

The core is written in the C programming language. The functions provided by it available to be used by numerous tools for the command line, a graphical user interface for the X11 window system and an alternative user interface in Java called JNNS.

The software package can be used without major modifications under UNIX -like operating systems and implements a variety of different algorithms. Use Microsoft Windows is possible through Cygwin.

Status

SNNS originally stood under a license which, although allowed access to the source code, but is not free. Modified versions were available only in the form of patches, as an active maintenance or development by the rights holder did not take place over several years.

Since mid-2008 ( version 4.3) SNNS is under the GNU LGPL.

SNNS is artificial neural networks despite his age because of the openness of the source code of the wide range of functions and because it's free, an interesting introduction to the topic.

Supplements

There are patches for the following purposes:

  • Remedy the known compilation problems and crashes
  • Of access from Python to the SNNS kernel
  • Integration of Python functions in neural networks

The patches have been integrated into the official version 4.3.
