Snorri Hjartarson

Snorri Hjartarson ( born April 22, 1906 in Hvanneyri, † December 27, 1986 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic writer.

He studied fine art first in Copenhagen and from 1931 at the Art Academy in Oslo. In 1936 he returned to Iceland and from 1939 was employed at the City Library of Reykjavík, which he headed from 1943 to 1966.

As an author, he debuted with the novel norwegischsprachigen Hoit flyver ravne 1934, but the breakthrough came with his isländischsprachigen poetry collections, one of which appeared 1944-1979 only four. In contrast to the modernist, so-called "nuclear poets " he remained faithful to the traditional forms of Icelandic poetry and fiddled with variations of the given versification.

He received for the last collection of poems Hauströkkrið yfir mér 1981 Literature Prize of the Nordic Council.
