So Long, Marianne is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. It was released in 1967 on Cohen's debut album, Songs of Leonard Cohen. Pitchfork Media leads it to number 190 in the list of the Top Songs of the 1960s.

Background

Leonard Cohen met in May 1960 to Hydra Marianne Jensen, who was married to the Norwegian author Axel Jensen. When that marriage broke up, Cohen and Jensen were a couple. This relationship lasted until the end of the 1960s.

Cover versions

Numerous other musicians recorded a cover version of So Long, Marianne, including John Cale with Suzanne Vega and James. Leonard Cohen's son Adam leads the song also in his live repertoire.

  • Marianne Jensen is dedicated to Leonard Cohen's third book of poems, " Flowers for Hitler" (1964). They can also be seen on the back of his second album Songs from a Room.
