Social Democratic Party of Albania

The Social Democratic Party of Albania (Albanian partia Social Demokrate e Shqipërisë; Acronym: PSD ) is a social democratic party small in Albania. She has an observer status in the Socialist International. Chairman since the party's founding in 1991 Skënder Gjinushi. In the last parliamentary elections in 2009, the PSD won 1.76% of the vote. The result was enough, however, for a single seat in parliament.

History

The Social Democratic Party was founded in March 1991, shortly after the communist dictatorship in Albania overthrown in the year 1990/91 and the one-party system was abolished. In April 1991, the trained mathematician Skënder Gjinushi was elected to the party chairmanship. Gjinushi was then in Albania no stranger to politicians; he had between 1987 and 1991 led the Ministry of Education under Prime Minister Ramiz Alia, the last communist dictator of Albania.

In the first free and democratic parliamentary elections in Albania in 1992, the PSD won seven out of 140 parliamentary seats. In the next elections in 1996, they did not participate, as they could take nine of the 155 seats in parliament a year later after the lottery uprising.

The PSD was not able to attach to their initial success in the next elections to the Albanian Parliament. An exception is the 2005 elections, when the PSD received seven of 140 seats. Throughout their existence, the Socialist Party has been working closely with the Socialist Party and formed coalitions with her. Subsequently, all election results are summarized in the table since 1992:
