Sod

A sod ( in Low German " Hullen ") is a ausgestochenes, square piece of turf. In humid areas, these pieces were used as building materials for houses.

Historically used for example in Iceland sod as a building material for so-called sod houses. They also served as a cover material or material for prehistoric grave mounds. The sods were used from the 17th century for creating sports turf surfaces ( England). In the Upper Harz Water Regale and Lower Harz Pond and grave system were also used for the sealing of pond dams.

Also, turf or turf is a piece of a peeled to measure sward. If the length is a multiple of the width, it is also called turf. It is used for example for football fields and gardens and rolled up for transport. Turf, there are also in sod or in folded instead of rolled form, depending on the manufacturing process. Made is the standard sod by the roots of the sod are separated 1-2 inches below the surface of the ground. The strip-shaped lateral cutting by means of a cutting disk. The production of turf is carried out in so-called turf schools.

The Low German term sods sometimes uses interchangeably. Basically sods and turf, however, are not identical. In both cases this is a tap of the humic topsoil with parts of the vegetation thereon. Unlike turf sods but were generally obtained in forests or Gentiles. Her purpose was different, as the economy Plagge had the fertilization of arable land to the destination.

Turf in sports

If a sports field is planted, a basic distinction between two methods of sowing and the use of turf. Where a generous budget is available and the time frame is tight, so preferably in professional sports turf is a very common solution. Much of the football stadiums will be equipped with rolling lawns, as not much time can elapse between the removal of the old sod and the completion of a new playing field. The sowing is carried out mainly at municipal sports fields.

After the sowing of a playing field goes much longer time to place initiation than after the turf - laying. At least half a year, but usually more than a year it takes to from the seed field has become a game that can be used without restrictions. In the case of rolling lawn can be assumed that a sufficient amount is within 48 hours on the spot - with limitations, however, to be expected in the winter months. The farm, the manufacturer is still created quite generous, in freezing, however, the possibility of peeling be severely limited.

A basic distinction (peel strength over 4 cm) in the turf between thin Soden (peel strength of about 2 cm) and thick sod. The latter bring with significantly more root mass. Consequently, even more soil and thus to carry a significantly higher weight and more volume. The price is therefore correspondingly higher. The turf - volume for approximately 8,000 m² area is approximately 7 truck loads for normal Soden and about 15 to 20 truckloads for thick sod.

The greening by classical reseeding with quality seed requires only a fraction of the costs that arise when laying turf, especially thick sod. The result is a range of less than 7,000 EUR for the classical seeding with starter fertilizer to 100,000 EUR and more for the laying of instantly recordable thick sod. The latter variant (Bundesliga standard) will be available from approximately 80,000 EUR. The upside potential is obtained, among other things by the scope of potentially payable preparatory measures such as the peeling of the old sod. In the " sandwich " it is also possible to lay the new lawn over the old. This option depend on the judgment of an expert. Within two working days of a sports field can be covered with turf, possibly even faster. Condition is almost always the previous peeling of Altnarbe and preparing the surface for laying. Also the base in accordance with DIN 18035, including drainage must be provided.
