Söderköping Municipality

Söderköping is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Östergötland County and the historic province of Östergötland. The main town of the municipality is Söderköping. Other towns are Östra Ryd, Snöveltorp, Västra Husby and other smaller villages.

Geography

Söderköping is a coastal community on the Baltic Sea. The coast is characterized by the numerous offshore islets ( Santa Anna's skärgård ), of which the coastal regions archipelago is used for agriculture. Apart from the heavily indented coastline area and Slätbaken, the deep stretches along the northern boundary of the municipality into the country, the municipality area is characterized by hills. While the hills are mostly wooded, the valleys are open and used for agricultural purposes.

Economy

Agriculture and industry play only a modest role in the community. The main industry is tourism, due to the archipelago, the Göta Canal and the health and spa in Söderköping has a long tradition. Just off the coast lies the ruins Stegeborg, the birthplace and residence of King Johan III. had.
