Sodium is the sodium salt of benzoic acid. It is approved as a food additive with the E number 211.
Properties
Sodium benzoate is a white, crystalline solid. The compound is odorless and slightly hygroscopic. It is flammable and readily soluble in water.
Use
Sodium benzoate is bacteriostatic and fungistatic and therefore as a food additive (E 211) to preserve food ( activity optimum at pH <3.6 ) is used.
In pyrotechnics, it is mostly used as fuel in connection with brandfördendem potassium perchlorate.
In the synthesis of polypropylene, there is used as a nucleating agent.
In medicine it is used in combination with L- arginine hydrochloride as an emergency drug for treatment of hyperammonemia.
Compatibility
Sodium benzoate can allergies such as asthma and hives trigger and loaded hepatic metabolism. A British study called sodium benzoate, which is used as a preservative in cola drinks, in addition to other additives as a possible trigger for ADHD. Literally it says in the study, which appeared in the British medical journal The Lancet: "These results show that adverse effects not only in children with extreme hyperactivity ( such as ADHD ), but also occur in the normal population ."
