Sodium bismuthate is an inorganic chemical compound of sodium from the group of bismuthates.

Production and representation

Sodium bismuthate can be obtained by reaction of bismuth ( III) oxide with sodium hydroxide and bromine.

Properties

Sodium bismuthate is a yellow-brown odorless hygroscopic solid which is insoluble in cold water. In hot water, it decomposes to form bismuth ( III) oxide, sodium hydroxide and oxygen.

The compound is usually present as hydrate, wherein the water content is generally 3.5 H2O, a maximum of 5 H2O per formula unit is wavering. It reacts with acids to partial dissolution and formation of higher bismuth oxides. They oxidize manganese ( II) ions in cold sulfuric acid to permanganate. Sodium bismuthate is a connection from the ilmenite - type and has a trigonal crystal structure with space group R3.

Use

Sodium bismuthate is used for testing of manganese in iron, steel and ores. It is also used for the oxidation of alcohols, phenols and olefins. This application was first reported in 1949 by Rigby.
