Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate is a mixture of isomers generally is one of the sulfonates. This chemical is one of the most important and most powerful components in many cleaning products.

Structure

The sulfo group is bonded directly to the benzene ring. The position of the alkyl group varied relative to the sulfo group. This is known as structured as alkyl benzene sulfonates (ABS). The total length of the alkyl group has 12 carbon atoms with sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate. Although the alkyl group is branched at the first carbon atom of the residue refers to the compound as a linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS). This has the historical reason, as previously alkylbenzene sulfonates ( tetrapropylenebenzenesulfonate ) were used had the highly branched alkyl groups and these were insufficient biologically degraded. The figure on the left shows an even practically important, component of the mixture.

Physical Properties

  • Soluble in water
  • Crystalline, white to yellowish powder
  • Flammable solid

Biological Significance

Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate met for the biodegradability Tensidverordnung or the European Detergent Regulation; However, there remain durable, back and fish toxic degradation products.

Use

Many sulfonates are used as surfactants, in more detail, as anionic surfactants, especially in cleaning compositions such as detergents.
