The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a recognized by the FCI Irish dog breed (FCI Group 3, Section 1, Standard No. 40).

Origin and History

Of the four Irish terrier breeds he is perhaps the oldest. Written evidence of a soft -haired ( " soft coated " ) Terrier has existed for 200 years. Clearly this is not, however, as all terrier breeds are closely related. He comes from the southern Irish counties Kerry and Cork and is related to the Kerry Blue Terrier and Irish Terriers.

Description

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is up to 48 cm tall and 20 kg. The hair feels in texture soft and silky, not harsh, without undercoat, in wheat color of any shade. The young dog is dark, only the coat in the adult dog is curled right wheaten and wavy or open. The Wheaten does not shed and does not change between summer and winter coat. The grooming must be done quite regularly ( combing, brushing and cutting ) because it felts very quickly. The ears are small falling forward. The character of the Wheaten is generally described as happy, people-friendly, fearless and very trainable, with a little headstrong.

Use

Originally used as farmers, farm and hunting dog, many dogs of this breed alive today as a family dog ​​. He is taking advantage of its defense preparedness, can be used as a guard dog.
