Software maintainer

The maintainer (English for maintenance, Sustainer, caregiver ) is at most free software projects, the moderator of a project, responsible for the project, assigns, maintains versions, compiling software packages and take care of the processing of program errors. Occasionally, the maintainer is also the only person working on this project. For most projects, but there are next to the maintainer or software developers who are not self- maintainers and their contributions are integrated by the maintainer. Large projects have usually several or even many maintainers, who are then responsible only for specific areas. Thus, in the GCC over 200 maintainers are listed, the Linux kernel has next to Linus Torvalds even 800 more maintainers.

Another example of open source software development with maintainers is the Debian-GNU/Linux-Projekt.
