Software Package Data Exchange

Software Package Data Exchange ® ( SPDX ™ ) describes a standard format to facilitate the handling of freeware and open source software, especially in businesses and communities. It is intended to simplify the issues around licenses, copyrights and cooperation of software components. The declared aim of SPDX forum is to help businesses in the procurement and use of free and open software.

The format is developed by the SPDX Workgroup, a workgroup of the Linux Foundation. The origins go back to an initiative in 2010, version 1.0 was released in August 2011. The terms " Software Package Data Exchange" and " SPDX " are registered trademarks of the Linux Foundation.
