SOKIMEX

SOKIMEX is the largest oil companies in Cambodia.

Sokimex was founded after the invasion of Vietnamese troops in Cambodia in 1979 to secure the country's supply of fuel. The head of Sokimex Sok Kong until 2007 was also president of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce in Phnom Penh - in this function successor to the tycoons Teng Bunma.

Since 1999 Sokimex collects the entrance fees in Angkor: depending on the period between 20 and 60 U.S. dollars per visitor. The company owns the meantime, two luxury hotels in Sihanoukville (2004) and Siem Reap ( 2005).

Besides Sokimex the Cambodian Tela Company is dominant in the marketing of petroleum in the country. Foreign companies ( Caltex, Total, BP, Petronas ), however, play a subordinate role.

Within the territorial waters of Cambodia substantial oil deposits are suspected. The exploitation so far failed due to unresolved maritime boundaries with neighboring Thailand.
