Solander-Box

A Solander box is a clamshell box in book form. It is made of wood and is provided with a stable rollover ceiling. It is used primarily for the storage of books, documents and graphics. The exterior of the cassettes is often covered with fabric or leather, while the inside is lined with thick paper.

The Solander box was invented by the Swedish botanist Daniel Solander during his work as a librarian for the British Museum.
