Solidarity Electoral Action

The Electoral Action Solidarity ( pl. Akcja Wyborcza Solidarność, AWS) was founded in 1996 electoral alliance in Poland. It consisted of about 40 to 50 groups from the post - Solidarity camp, the former regime opposition in the People's Republic of Poland. From 1997 to 2001, the AWS presented with Jerzy Buzek, the prime minister.

History

After the parties of the post- Solidarity camp had missed almost all the way into the Sejm due to the newly introduced restrictive clauses in the parliamentary elections in 1993 and its presidential candidate Lech Wałęsa was defeated in the 1995 elections against the SLD candidate Aleksander Kwasniewski, initiated the chairman of the Solidarity trade union, Marian Krzaklewski, 1996, the establishment of an electoral alliance, which should summarize the numerous groups of the former regime opposition. The resulting Electoral Action Solidarity finally united national-liberal, national-conservative, Christian democratic and nationalist forces. Chairman was Marian Krzaklewski.

From the Sejm elections of 1997, the AWS was 33.8 % actually as strongest party, and together with the Freedom Union ( UW), a coalition led by Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek. Although the coalition due to lack of party discipline AWS - va the Christian- National Union ( ZChN ) voted often against government bills - during the legislative session fell apart and Buzek had last rule with a minority government, he was the very first Prime Minister until the end of the parliamentary term in office.

The run by his government domestic reforms and the accession to NATO (1999) and the approach to the EU led to intra-party oppositions. 2001, the AWS began to fall apart due to programmatic and especially personal differences. Important personalities stepped over to the newly formed Civic Platform (PO ) and for Law and Justice ( PiS). Together with the Movement for the Reconstruction of Poland ( ROP) was the AWS now the electoral alliance Wyborcza Solidarność Akcja Prawicy ( Solidarity Electoral Action of the Right; AWSP ).

The 2001 elections, however, were a fiasco for the AWSP. The coalition managed to not even a place in the Sejm by only 5.6%. Since then AWSP is active only at the local level.
