Sollefteå Municipality

Sollefteå is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province Västernorrland County and the historic Ångermanland. The main town of the municipality is Sollefteå.

Other towns are Junsele Långsele, Näsåker, Österforse, Ramsele and others. Through the community use the Imperial roads 87 and 90 as well as the railway lines Härnösand - Långsele and Ånge - Vännäs.

Geography

The municipality extends 130 km along the Ångermanälven from northwest to southeast. In Sollefteå the Faxälven empties into the Ångermanälven. The municipality, located in the foothills of the Scandinavian mountain range, is mountainous with deep river valleys and numerous lakes. About 80 percent of the area is forested and the southwest of the village there are extensive wetlands.

Economy

The forestry sector still plays an important role in the economic life of the community as a traditional source of income. Electricity generation (16 hydropower plants - 15 percent of hydropower production in Sweden ) is also an important employer. There are also medium and small industrial enterprises in different industries. After the dissolution of the garrison in 2000, some state agencies (or departments ) were transferred to Sollefteå.

Attractions

Northwest of Sollefteå on Ångermanälven are Nämforsen ( 37 kilometers from Sollefteå ) and Junsele ( 75 kilometers from Sollefteå ). Nämforsen is one of the biggest rapids in the Ångermanälven, now expanded into a hydroelectric power plant. Below the power plant is an area with rock carvings from the Stone and Bronze Age. With more than 1,700 carvings, it is one of the largest in Northern Europe. On the south bank is also a former stone-age settlement, which was reconstructed and can be visited.

Junsele is a tourist. One of the largest open-air museums Ångermanlands is Junsele. In summer, a music and arts week is organized annually. Nearby is the nature reserve by Edens and the zoo Hamptjärnsberget lie.

On Faxälven, about 60 kilometers north of Sollefteå, is Ramsele. The old church of Ramsele on the banks of the river is from the 13th century. But especially the shoreline scenery of Faxälven at Ramsele (nature reserve ) is unique and a known habitat for beaver.
