Solomon W. Golomb

Solomon Wolf Golomb (* May 30, 1932 in Baltimore ) is an American mathematician and engineer. In recreational mathematics it is popular as the discoverer of polyominoes. Furthermore Golomb invented a variant of chess checkers. The wider public he is known by the eponymous Golomb rulers.

Golomb is Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California. He specializes in problems of combinatorial analysis and number theory and coding ( Golomb code).

For 2011 him the National Medal of Science was awarded. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
