Soltan Mosque

The Sultanowskaja Mosque (Russian Султановская мечеть, Tatar Солтан мәчете: Soltan Mosque, also Eighth Cathedral ) is located in Kazan, capital of the Russian republic of Tatarstan.

The mosque was built in 1867 or 1868 by the Kazan merchant Dschihanscha Ussmanow ( 1817-1872 ), the architect was PI Romanov. It was built in a traditional Tatar - Bulgarian architecture of the Middle Ages, which contains eclectic elements of Russian National Romanticism. The three-storey minaret is located directly above the entrance.

The first prayer in the mosque held the Tatar clerics Schihabetdin Mardschäni.

On 11 November 1931, the mosque was closed by the Soviet authorities. In 1990, the minaret was restored in 1994, the mosque was returned to believers.
