Solvent Yellow 124 is a yellow azo dye which is used in the European Union as Markierstoff for the detection of fuel oil.

Application

The fraudulent use of ( tax-privileged, that is comparatively cheap ) to impede oil as fuel, the marking was introduced from 1 April 1976. Light fuel oil were in Germany and, as in most EU Member States, dyed red. But there are also yellow or blue colorations.

Since the coloring can be relatively easily removed by a technically savvy, first furfural was added, which is detectable with a simple test. Because furfural is unstable and the assay may be carried out only with a relatively hazardous reagents, furfural was replaced with Solvent Yellow 124. In order to track violations internationally, only Solvent Yellow 124 is since August 1, 2002 in the EU Member States for the uniform heating oil labeling as Markierstoff admitted. Solvent Yellow 124 itself hardly colors the oil, not yellow. The red dye is further added in addition to simple distinction.

Proof

Solvent Yellow 124 is to prove itself when diluted with an indicator. Also, the percentage of the added fuel oil is to be determined. Here Solvent Yellow 124 reacts in an acidic environment to an intensely red water-soluble dye that stains the lower aqueous phase red.
