Geography

The territory of the district Sömmerda is in the territory of the middle Unstrut in the northeastern part of the Thuringian Basin and extends in an east-west direction from the fin to the Unstrut Jam at Straußfurt and in north-south direction from the foothills of the Hainleite at Bilzingsleben to Erfurt. Neighboring districts are in the north of Kyffhauserkreis, in the east of Saxony-Anhalt castle district, in the southern district of Weimar and the district-free city Erfurt and in the west the district of Gotha and the Unstrut Hainich.

History

1974, a resting place of primitive man (Homo erectus bilzingslebenensis ) at Bilzingsleben, just on the northern border of the county, found that one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe for the time around 400000 BCE. Economy

The image of the district Sömmerda is characterized by intensively used agricultural landscape. The region around Kindelbrueck here is traditional fruit-growing area. Industrialization began after the establishment of the first gun factory by Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse 1840 in the district town Sömmerda. Railway
