Sophia Magdalena of Denmark

Sophie Magdalene of Denmark (Swedish Sofia Magdalena, born July 3, 1746 Copenhagen, † August 21, 1813 at Ulriksdal Palace in Stockholm ) was a princess of Denmark and by marriage Queen of Sweden.

Life

She was the eldest daughter of King Frederick V of Denmark and the British Princess Louise. At the age of four she lost her mother.

1766, in the year of death of her father, she was in Stockholm with the Swedish king Gustav III. married.

She was very religious and very shy, which earned her the ridicule of her husband cultivated, the lively and witty women estimated. Sophie Magdalene was considered unintelligent, which is certainly not the case - except her Danish mother tongue they spoke Swedish, English and French. In particular, they suffered from the rejection of her mother Luise Ulrike of Prussia, sister of Frederick the Great.

The marriage with Gustav III. was established in 1777 completed. The late seventies, had the king divorce plans he wanted to start with Sophie Magdalene's alleged infertility. However, his personal physician refused to issue a corresponding certificate and made the king to point out that Sophie Magdalene in the case of remarriage could possibly have children. Thus would Gustav III. as a liar or as impotent stood - in light of this view he rejected his divorce plans. About the married life of Gustav III. and his wife has been much speculation. As in 1778, the Crown Prince Gustav Adolf ( † 1837) was born, there were rumors of court officials Adolf Fredrik Munck was the father of the child. These rumors are not correct in all likelihood.

After the death of his second son, Karl Gustav (1782-1783) cooled the relationship of the couple from final. Sophie Magdalene withdrew more and more from public life and lived until her death unnoticed at the Swedish court.
