The Sophia River is a river in the north-west of the Australian state of Tasmania.

Geography

River

The river rises about 6 km east-northeast of Sophia peak in the Granite Gate Conservation Area, which adjoins the north-west of the Cradle Mountain - Lake St. Clair National Park. From there, it flows west and enters the southern part of Lake Mackintosh, who leads him north to the Mackintosh River.

Dam project

As part of the dam system on the Pieman River and its tributaries is connected to the Lake Murchison, so that its water can be used for the generation of electrical energy in Lake Mackintosh Sophia Sophia River through the tunnel. For maintenance of this tunnel there is a small tunnel that Sophia Adit.

Homonymy

Also of Sophia peak near the river and the Sophia Street in the small town of Tullah bear this name. Similarly, there is the Sophia Point in the small town of Strahan.
