Sopolis of Macedon

Sopolis (Greek Σώπολις ), son of Hermodoros, was a Macedonian cavalry officer and companion ( Hetairos ) Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC.

Already in the year 335 BC led Sopolis as the ilarchos recruited from Amphipolis squadron of Hetairenreiterei during the campaign against the Triballi. During the Asia campaign, he commanded it in 331 BC at the Battle of Gaugamela. In the winter of 328 to 327 BC, he was abbefohlen with some other officers of Nautaka ( Sogdiana ) to Macedonia to eye new recruits there.

Sopolis apparently never returned to the main army, since it is then no longer mentioned. Reason for this may have been bc the participation of his son Hermolaos on the Page conspiracy in the spring of 327, after which it was executed. Hermolaos was a student of Callisthenes and Alexander served as a Page. Because he had disregarded the royal privilege for the first javelin during a boar hunt, he was whipped at the instigation of Alexander. To repay this alleged injustice, Hermolaos had planned with some other pages the murder of Alexander, but they were betrayed at the end.
