Sopron Mountains

P1F1

The Sopron Mountains ( Hungarian: Soproni - hegység ) is one of the easternmost foothills of the Alps on the Austrian- Hungarian border southwest of Sopron ( Sopron ). As a continuation of the Rosalia Mountains separates with this, at the narrowest point of the Burgenland, the Nordburgenland from Central Burgenland. The only two road links between the North and the Middle Burgenland Burgenland - the Burgenlandstraße B50 and the Burgenland expressway S31 - run in the region of the victory Grabener saddle where the Sopron Mountains and the Rosaliengebirge collide.

Similar to the Rosaliengebirge is the Sopron Mountains of gneiss and mica schist, but also - especially in the West - from younger ( Neogene ) sediments such as gravels and sands, which also can cause coal locally ( Brennbergbánya, Helenenschacht ). The ridge is heavily wooded and reaches 606 meters. There are important layers of red wine Blaufränkischland On the southern slopes of the mountain.

The highest peaks of the mountains are Ödenburger the 606 meter high Burns bars in the West and the High latch (Hungarian Magas - berc, 553 m) right at the Austrian - Hungarian border. On it is a viewing tower. Another peak is Angerwald (535 meters), which is entirely due to the Burgenland page.
