Sopronkőhida

Sopronkőhida, German Steinambrückl, is a place in the small area Sopron - Fertőd, located in the Győr- Moson -Sopron county in north-west Hungary. According to census, the population was 1,312 in 2001.

Location

The place is located 4 kilometers north of Sopron, 2 kilometers west of Fertőrákos and a few kilometers south of the border to Austria.

Management

Since 2007, the towns Sopronkőhida, Tómalom and Jánostelep form an administrative unit.

Infrastructure

Of special significance is the prison of Sopronkőhida (Hungarian Sopronkőhidai Fegyház és Börtön ), which was built in 1883. Since the monarchy, the prison in the past was known that there mainly political prisoners of various nationalities imprisoned, tortured and executed. Thus, the Hungarian politician, journalist and resistance fighter Endre Bajcsy- Zsilinszky was hanged at the time of National Socialism there on 24 December 1944. In recent years, the prison was modernized, expanded and is now one of the largest in Hungary. Today there are more than 700 people detained in prison and 250 persons are employed.
