The Institute is affiliated to the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission ( IAEC ). In 1958 the construction at Soreq Nuclear Research Center began. The reactor was put into operation in 1960. It is a 5 -megawatt light-water reactor, which was delivered in the 1950s by the United States as part of the Atoms for Peace program.

In addition, there is a 10 MeV proton cyclotron and a 40 - MeV linear accelerator, which is expected to be even more in 2013.

As early as the 1970s, the Soreq Nuclear Research Center turned away from the pure nuclear research and devoted himself to other interdisciplinary fields of physics, medicine, astronautics, nuclear safety, atmospheric research or nuclear medicine.

On June 21, 1990, there was an incident in which an employee has been contaminated. The man died five weeks later, despite intensive medical treatment to his injuries rays.
