Sorhagenia lophyrella

Sorhagenia lophyrella is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of Chrysopeleiidae.

Features

The moths reach a wingspan 8-11 mm. Sorhagenia lophyrella similar Sorhagenia rhamniella, but differs by the slightly lighter forewings and hind wings pale gray. A reliable differentiation is only possible through a genital examination.

Biology

The caterpillars develop on Purgier buckthorn ( Rhamnus cathartica ), rock - buckthorn ( Rhamnus saxatalis ) and dwarf - buckthorn ( Rhamnis pumila ). Rarely do you find the caterpillars also of Alpine - buckthorn ( Rhamnus alpina) and Holly buckthorn ( Rhamnus alaternus ). The caterpillars live from early April to late May. They feed initially on the seed capsules and later also to the loosely spun terminal leaves. The caterpillars pupate in a cocoon of light on the ground. It makes one generation per year. The moths fly from mid-May to early August, and can be knocked out of the host plants.
