Sorin Oprescu

Sorin Mircea Oprescu ( born November 7, 1951 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian physician and politician.

Oprescu studied from 1973 to 1978 in Bucharest medicine and became a surgeon. In 1981 he received his doctorate. He began an academic career and is since 2000 professor at the Medical and Pharmaceutical University Carol Davila in Bucharest.

In the 1990s, he became a health policy operates. 1992/93 he was an advisor to the Ministry of Health from 1996 to 2000 of the Bucharest mayor's office.

Since 2000 Oprescu is also politically active; for Partidul Social Democrat ( PSD, until 2001 Partidul Democratiei Sociale in România, PDSR ) he was from 2000 to 2004 and from 2005 to 2008 Member of the Senate. During these periods, he served as Vice President of the Health Commission of the Senate. Temporarily held Oprescu higher party functions, such as PSD - chairman in Bucharest as well as vice president of the party as a whole.

In spring 2008 Oprescu planned his candidacy for mayor of Bucharest, but was defeated in an internal party vote against a candidate. Then Oprescu resigned from the PSD and ran as an Independent. In the second round he could Vasile Blaga, the candidate of the PD -L, defeat and was mayor of the Romanian capital.

Oprescu is considered one of the most popular politicians in the country. He decided to run for the presidential elections on 22 November 2009, although he again ran as an Independent. His chances were first granted the right to reach the ballot and in this to defeat the previous incumbent Traian Basescu. Ultimately, however, Oprescu won only 3 % of the votes and thus missed its target clear choice.

2012 candidate Oprescu again as mayor. With the support of the newly established social-liberal party alliance USL Oprescu received in June 2012 on the first ballot 56.67 % of the votes and thus became the second time Mayor of Bucharest.
