Conceptual history

Old Church

Already in early Christianity was the identification of Jesus Christ as Σωτήρ "Savior, Redeemer " significant; they flowed in an old discreet Christian identification. The Greek word for fish ΙΧΘΥΣ ( Ichthys ) contains an acronym a concise Creed: The first letter of Ιησούς Χριστός Θεού Υιός Σωτήρ ( Iēsous Christós theou Hyiós Soter, "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior " ) give the word Ichthys "fish" and were passed as a symbol drawing.

History formative effect is Augustine of Hippo. Baptism gives according to him salvation, otherwise, such as by theoretical reflection and good living, is not equally accessible, as human nature is corrupted - one interpreted with the theological concept of original sin condition.

Medieval theology

Anselm of Canterbury so-called satisfaction theory has concluded that a blemish on the part of man, the only way was corrected, that God became man himself and dies in Jesus Christ, his Son, a sacrifice that atones for human guilt. Anselm speaks of an external God's glory ( gloria dei externa) and not by his personal honor: God's own honor can by anything, especially not by human flaw, be touched. Anselm developed his views most fully in Cur Deus Homo (Why God became man? ).

Modern Times

Karl Barth's revelation theory is that God has revealed Himself through the death of Jesus Christ and thus redeemed man from original sin.
