South African Astronomical Observatory

The South African Astronomical Observatory ( SAAO ) is a center for optical and infrared astronomy based in South Africa. There is a facility of the National Research Foundation.

The SAAO headquarters is located in the edge area of ​​the Observatory in Cape Town. The main telescopes that are used for research purposes, are located at the observation station of SAAO around 4 hours drive from the city center.

History

The SAAO was founded in January 1972 by Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa and the Science and Engineering Research Council of Great Britain together. It combines the facilities of the " Royal Observatory " (1820 ) and the "Republic Observatory " (1903 ) in Johannesburg and so made ​​a great site with improved facilities.
