South African Class NG5 2-8-2

The locomotives of the class NG 5 of the South African Railways (SAR ) were steam locomotives with the wheel arrangement 1'D1 ' ( Mikado ) for 600mm narrow gauge (NG stands for Narrow Gauge ).

The locomotives were built for the Otavibahn in South West Africa (now Namibia) and corresponded extensively in the construction of the three locomotives of the Hd series, which had been purchased in 1912 by the German administration. How this came the new locomotives from Henschel.

Cylinder dimensions, boiler pressure and driving wheel diameter, and thus the theoretical pull of both types were the same. The locomotives had outer frame and cylinder, who worked on crank webs. The kettle was equipped with a superheater. The Tender was four axes in order to take the necessary on the long, low-water line inventory items.

The only significant difference between the Hd and NG 5 was the equipment of the SAR locomotives with Saugluftbremsen, while the German locomotives had air brakes. Visually, both classes can be distinguished at the front end design; the stage in front of the smoke box door was at the NG 5 until just before the cylinder block is reset. The arrangement of the front drive shaft tightly against the first Kuppelradsatz was maintained, in comparison with the apparent later class NG 15 more forward cylinders.

The locomotives remained until the re-gauging their route to Cape gauge in 1960 and were in use, unlike based on them, succession NG Class 15 not moved to South Africa and were decommissioned and scrapped. None of the locomotive has been preserved.
