South East Cape

The southeast cape (English South East Cape ) is the southernmost point of Tasmania, and thus also the southernmost point of the Australian and Tasmanian mainland together.

Environment and accessibility

The southeast cape is located on a rocky, uninhabited peninsula on the administrative territory of the commune Huon Valley, which includes the area around the Tasmanian coast. The Cape is the easternmost point of a largely running in West southwest -northeast direction coastal strip in the south of Tasmania, the westernmost point is about 65 kilometers away Südwestkap (South West Cape). Beyond the two capes bends the coastline to the northeast or northwest. Immediately to the west of Südostkaps the Südkapbucht ( South Cape Bay) follows, which is named after the Southern Cape (South Cape), which - about ten miles as the crow flies from the southeast - surrounds her West End. A little further west, about 14 kilometers from the southeast, the eastern boundary of the South West National Park, the largest parks of Australia stretches.

" Southernmost point of Australia " and " ocean border "

The cape is often referred to as " the most southerly point of Australia ". This applies, however, only for the Australian and Tasmanian mainland. Several islands belonging to the Australian territory lying south than the southeast cape. These include a number of the mainland near Tasmanian islands: About 45 kilometers west of the Cape are located in front of the Tasmanian coast Maatsuyker Islands ( with the immediately southwest upstream Needle Rocks ), the further south rich part as the Cape, as well as the rocky island Mewstone that is even located about 11 kilometers further south than the southeast. To the east of Südostkaps protrudes a small group of rocky islands on the water, of which Pedra Branca ( Coordinates: 43 ° 51'36 "S, 146 ° 58'28 " E ) is located almost 24 kilometers further south than the southeast. Secondly, the Australian islands mentioned, far from the rest of the mainland: the southernmost island of Australia is the Macquarie Island (coordinates: 54 ° 30 ' S, 158 ° 57 ' E), which not only significantly further to the east, but also 1,236 miles to the south lies than the southeast; the Macquarie Island belongs to the same community as the Tasmanian southeast cape ( Huon Valley). In addition, Australia claims a part of Antarctica (see territorial claim in Antarctica ).

The southeast cape is also sometimes considered an imaginary border between Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean to the south of Australia. For example, be measured as record times for the crossing of the Indian Ocean in part, the times for covering the distance between the South African Cape of Good Hope and the Australian southeast cape.
