South Harbour (Nova Scotia)

South Harbour ( English for " South Harbor ") is a small community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in the Aspy Bay Region Victoria County on Cape Breton Iceland.

The community is adjacent to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park in the south.

Geography

Actually South Harbour is a misnomer - the only exit of the water body is a channel to cross through a sand bank into the sea, and is too small for commercial vessels. The sandbar is narrow enough that the salty sea water enters the port so that the port is the water brackish water. Therefore, the body of water is actually an estuary. The channel is regularly closed and opened again, and shifts location up and down the sand bank. The two main bays of the South Harbour are Effie's Bach and Bach Glasgow.

Economy

As with many communities on Cape Breton Iceland, fishing and tourism are the main source of income for residents. Oysters and clams are harvested in the harbor. A variety of seasonal accommodations are available for visitors, and there are many opportunities for outdoor activities such as canoeing, kayaking, hiking, swimming and sailing in and around the community.
