South Shields

South Shields is a port city in the district of South Tyneside Metropolitan Counties Tyne and Wear in North East England with about 83,700 inhabitants.

The city has a seaport at the mouth of the Tyne in the North Sea. For the industry include the manufacture of machinery, steel products and ships.

80 AD the Roman Arbeia base was built near South Shields, where there is now an excavation site. There they found an altar with an inscription of Weihe God Alator. The modern city was founded in the 13th century.

South Shields is the seat of the textile company Barbour, who was known for her oilcloth jackets world.
