The Southern whale dolphin ( Lissodelphis peronii ) is one of two species of the genus Lissodelphis within the Dolphins ( Delphinidae ). He is at home in the open sea throughout the temperate zone of the southern hemisphere. The northernmost occurrence is located at 19 degrees south latitude.

Features

The whale dolphin differs from all other species of dolphins by the complete absence of the fin. Southern Right dolphins are very slender, long to about 3 m dolphins. Females reach a length of about 2.3 m. The maximum weight is about 100 kg. Snout, fins, flanks and belly are white, otherwise this dolphin is black. Calves are gray or mottled.

Behavior

The Southern Right dolphins occurs in schools with up to 1000 animals.
