Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes

Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes is the band of the American singer and songwriter Southside Johnny ( real name is John Lyon, born December 4, 1948 in Neptune, New Jersey, USA).

The beginnings in Ocean Grove

Lyon grew up in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, and graduated at Neptune High School. As an artist, Southside Johnny first met in the mid-1970s, immediately after Bruce Springsteen as a member of " Jersey Shore Music Scene" in appearance.

His first three albums, " I Do not Want to Go Home" ( 1976), "This Time It's for Real" ( 1977) and " Hearts of Stone" (1978 ) were strongly influenced by rhythm and blues. Were produced albums by Steven Van Zandt, the founder of the band and close friend of Bruce Springsteen. All songs were also written by Van Zandt and / or Springsteen. The "I Do not Want to Go Home " written by Van Zandt should Southside Johnny's are signature song, a mix of brass phrases and emotional lines of text. Other hits include not only the title track of the first three albums, " I Played the Fool ", " Talk to Me ", " The Fever ," " Love on the Wrong Side of Town ", "Trapped Again", a version of Sam Cooke " Havin 'a Party" as well as provided with a new arrangement " Without Love " by Aretha Franklin.

The 1980s - just behind Springsteen

In 1982, Rolling Stone magazine chose the album " Hearts of Stone" among the top 100 albums of the 1970s and 1980s. In West Germany, the band gave concerts among others several days in Uncle Pö in Hamburg and the Kant -Kino in Berlin. The appearance in the Grugahalle in Essen (1979 ) was released in 2004 along with the live recording from Cologne Live Music Hall in 1992 in the DVD series " at Rockpalast " WDR.

Since the formation constantly stood in Springsteen's large shadow, stayed out of the hoped-for national commercial success, and in 1979 they were dropped by their record company. The Jukes were working without Van Zandt on, the had become a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, and released the albums "The Jukes " (1979) and " Love Is a Sacrifice" (1980); Guitarist Billy Rush took over the role of main songwriter for the band at this time. But these two albums did not meet with particular success, higher sales figures were the first best-of compilation " Havin 'a Party with Southside Johnny" (1979 ) and the first double live album " Reach Up and Touch the Sky - Live" (1980 ) is reached.

During the eighties published Southside Johnny continuously new recordings: "Trash It Up " (1983), a produced by Nile Rodgers and influenced by disco sound album; " In the Heat" (1984 ) and again more on the origins of orienting " At Least We Got Shoes" (1986 ), on which, inter alia, Patti Scialfa, the future wife of Bruce Springsteen, along with Bobby Bandiera as a songwriter participated, which in turn should take Billy Rush's post from now on. Scialfa is also, the latter since 2002 committed to working with Lisa Lowell and Soozie Tyrell also in Springsteen's E Street Band to listen to several albums by the Jukes in the background choir.

In 1988 Johnny's first solo album " Slow Dance ", which contained mainly ballads and love songs, but also the song " Little Calcutta ", which today is considered Southsides political of song and describes the life and climate of the homeless in New York City.

There were several changes to both the record company and in the staffing of the Jukes, accompanied by ongoing tours.

The 1990s with a timeout

His recording career has continued with the album Better Days ( 1991), which was produced by Van Zandt and contained songs by Bruce Springsteen. In addition to the Southside songs by Van Zandt, Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi were sung. The Jukes launched a worldwide tour to promote the album. But once again showed Southside Johnny's bad luck with the record industry when his record company still went bankrupt during the tour.

Southside created the theme song for the sitcom Dave 's World, a cover of Billy Joel 's You May Be Right.

After Southside took a break from the music business and went to Nashville. Some members of the Asbury Jukes were a member of the Max Weinberg Seven and appeared in the television show Late Night with Conan O'Brien, while others as a recording and touring musician worked for artists such as Jon Bon Jovi, Willy DeVille, Graham Parker and Robert Cray.

In 1997 Southside back into the spotlight with the published on an independent label double album Spittin 'Fire, a semi - acoustic live recording, which was recorded in France during a series of ten concerts at the " Chesterfield Café" in the previous year.

From 2000, with own label

After a further period without a record contract Southside finally founded in 2001 his own record label " Leroy Records" and released since her albums on their own: Messin ' with the Blues (2000), Going to Jukesville (2002), Missing Pieces (2004 ) into the Harbour ( 2005), each with one half, with ten classics and the other with his own compositions, which are not infrequently is collaborations with guitarist Bobby Bandiera or Jukes Jukes - pianist and organist Jeff Kazee.

Southside Johnny is still almost constantly on tour and has in all concerts a core audience, especially in some regions of the U.S., but also in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. The DVD " Live at The Opera House" ( 2003) recorded in 2002 in Newcastle / England, documented after three decades still unbroken energy of a Jukes concert. From 2005 to Southside Johnny lived for a time in Delaware Bay, 2008, however, lives again in Ocean Grove. Its annual incidence in Springsteen's " Asbury Park Holiday Show" caused just as much baking as Springsteen himself

Since 2003, Southside Johnny are in the context of his every year in the last quarter carried out European tour each an exclusive concert in Germany ( Osnabrück and Melle ), arriving to the viewers from all over Germany.

At the turn of 2006/2007 the total of five CDs comprehensive box set Jukebox has been used: four CDs with previously unreleased material and largely a bonus disc with highlights of the legendary Jukestock concert from 2001.
