Souzão

Sousão is a red grape variety. She's an old, autochthonous variety from the north of Portugal. They originally came from the Minho, where she still serves for the production of red Vinho Verde. Because of their color strength, it was used in 1790 in the region of the Douro, to give the port a dark color. However, under the name Sousón it is also popular in the Spanish Galicia. Small plantings are also in South Africa, California (→ Viticulture in California, 62 acres = 25 acres. ) And Australia known. A relationship for the variety Vinhão seems likely, however, could not be determined unequivocally.

The late maturing variety produces deep red, fruity wines that find their way into the port wine in a blend.
