The S -178 was a conventionally powered submarine of the Whiskey class of the Soviet Navy.

The submarine sank on October 21, 1981 after colliding with the fishing vessels RFS Refrizkerator - 13 near Vladivostok within minutes. Here, 18 sailors died aboard the submarine to immediately. Of the eleven men who had been thrown into the water in the collision, seven were rescued by fishing vessels. 26 survivors managed to escape in the front of the submarine. They decided two days later for the rise from a depth of 35 m. This six other crew members died.

The boat was lifted on 15 November 1981, later scrapped.
