Söyembikä of Kazan

Sujumbike ( Tatar: Söyembikä; * 1516; † after 1554 in Moscow) was the last ruler of the Khanate of Kazan. It is considered a national heroine of Tatarstan. The Sujumbike tower in Kazan was named after her.

Life

Sujumbike was a Nogaier Princess. She was taken about 12 years to Kazan and in 1533 the Tatar Khan Canğäli given to wife. 1535 her husband died and she had to Safagäräy 1536, her late husband's brother, marry, as was customary at that time. Her second husband died in 1549 and she remained as regent for her minor son Ütämesch, who was just two years old.

After the conquest of Kazan by Russian forces Sujumbike in 1553 given the Kazan Khan Şahğäli to the woman, who had Ivan IV helped in the conquest and taken as a hostage to Moscow. Her son was christened Alexander and studied in a Junker school. The Nogai Khan, the father of Sujumbike, asked the Russian Tsar, his daughter to accept the return to Kazan. Ivan IV did not answer.

Sujumbike died in Moscow after 1554th your burial is not known. Her son Utjamysch died at the age of 19 or 20 years from tuberculosis.
