Spaarndam

Spaarndam is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It lies on the Spaarne, which forms the border between the municipalities of Haarlem and Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude within the village.

History

Spaarndam was built on a dike, the Count Florens V. of Holland was built in 1285 at the mouth of the Spaarne in the IJ. The IJdijk was at times the only land link between Haarlem and Amsterdam. The inhabitants lived from Wegzoll and fishing. Between 1812 and 1927 Spaarndam was a separate municipality. By Einpolderungen and the growing population of the Randstad, the place extended in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially in the east and south strongly from. Today live in Spaarndam especially commuters. Spaarndam is also a popular destination.

Attractions

In Spaarndam - West is the historic town, which is one of the first protected the Netherlands, largely intact. Located here are the 1627 rebuilt after a storm Old Church ( Oude Kerk ), the picturesque port de Westkolk, an old lock system and a traditional eel smoke. Outside of the original village center there are two forts and other defenses of the position of Amsterdam. On the IJdeich a still image shows the native of American literature figure Hansje Brinker in sealing a hole in the dike. Built by the Dutch Tourist VVV statue symbolizes the long and arduous struggle of the Dutch people against the water.

  • Frans Hals ( ca, 1580-1666, painter) married on February 12, 1617 Lysbeth Reynier in Spaarndam.
  • Nicolaus Samuel Cruquius (1678-1754, a hydraulic engineer and cartographer ) lived and died in Spaarndam. His grave stone is located in the Old Church ( Oude Kerk ).
  • Simon Kuipers (* 1982, speed skater ) lives in Spaarndam.
