Space Harrier

Space Harrier is an arcade shoot 'em up developed by AM2 and published by Sega in 1985. To the game two successors were programmed: Space Harrier 3D ( 1988), Space Harrier II ( 1989), and the offshoot Planet Harrier ( 2001). As with Afterburner, the game makes it appear to scroll into the screen.

Space Harrier takes place in the so-called " Fantasy Zone ", a surreal game world, was taken up in 1986 by Sega with a same game again. This " Fantasy Zone " is displayed with bright colors a checkered floor and opponents like prehistoric animals, dragons from Chinese mythology and alien -looking equipment. The system forces the player character on a prescribed path through each level; the player can only move those horizontally and vertically to dodge enemy fire and aim.

Space Harrier is one of the first arcade games which uses a hydraulic sit-down arcade machine, which moves according to the joystick movements of the player. In addition, a stationary sit-down version, as well as a standard housing was produced. The game uses digitized voices. Thus, the player is welcomed to the example at the beginning of the first level with the following phrase: "Welcome to the Fantasy Zone! Get Ready! " There are 18 levels that each culminating in a boss fight. However, exceptions are the bonus level five and twelve, and the last level in which the player must defeat the 15 previous bosses.

Ports

Space Harrier was ported in the following years on Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, MS- DOS, Sega Saturn, Sega 32X, Sega Master System, PC Engine and Sinclair ZX Spectrum. For the master system, there are two versions. In addition to a normal conversion Sega presented a version with 3D glasses support ( Space Harrier 3D) applications. On the Dreamcast and the Xbox Space Harrier is playable mini-game in parts of the Shenmue series. For Game Boy Advance and PlayStation 2 were published by Sega Arcade Gallery Sega Classics Collection and games collections that contain the arcade game. With the Virtual Console Nintendo Wii Space Harrier is also playable. Likewise, Space Harrier Arcade to find than free playable on SEGA Mega Drive part Ultimate Collection for Xbox 360 and PS3.
