Spanky DeBrest

Jimmy " Spanky " DeBrest, even Spanky De Brest (actually James DeBrest; born April 24, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † March 1973 ) was an American jazz bassist. He played with Art Blakey and J. J. Johnson.

At the beginning of his career playing in local orchestras DeBrest in Philadelphia, then from 1956 to 1958 with Art Blakey, where he worked on the legendary session with Thelonious Monk in May 1957. From 1958 to 1960 he played in the band of JJ Johnson. He has also appeared on recordings by Ray Draper, Clifford Jordan, and Lee Morgan.
